Our workplaces are always changing particularly given the recent financial crisis we have just faced. Just like the workplace, employment law is always evolving and employers need to keep on top of the most recent cases impacting employment law from 2011 - 2012.
We will spend time discussing recent cases that provide us with insight into issues such as:
  • Damages for the infliction of mental distress and bad faith - are employer's still liable?
  • Bonuses and Stock Options owed upon termination of employment - what are the obligations on termination?
  • Frustration of Contract - frustrating or fruitful?
Please join us for this seminar in which we will have an in-depth discussion of how these issues impact your workplace and how you can take steps to avoid costly litigation.
James Heeney
James provides counsel to employers and employees in all areas of employment law. He is equally effective as a litigator when that best services his client's interest. James academic background is exemplary. As a law student, he won awards each year of his studies, culminating in the Law Society of Upper Canada's prestigious Award of Excellence recognizing the leading students in Ontario Law Schools. While at school, James worked at a law firm helping to prepare for trials and appeals. He also helped develop a training program used in all federal institutions. James earned his L.L.B from Queens's University in 2003 and was called to the Bar in Ontario in 2004.

   MP Roundtable Discussions

We are now in the last quarter of the fiscal year for both the Federal and Provincial Governments. The Kawartha Manufacturers’ Association (KMA) and the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) will be hosting two Manufacturers’ Roundtable discussions with local government representatives MPP Jeff Leal and MP Dean Del Mastro to discuss issues and matters important to manufacturers for the upcoming fiscal year’s budget and programming.

The MP Roundtable for Tri-Association Manufacturers will take place on January 19 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM  held in a central location at the Northumberland County Administration Building with the Tri-Association MP’s present and members of the KMA, NMA, QMA and CME. In addition to discussing other federal matters such as the SRED tax credit program, this would be an ideal opportunity to make a request to the federal government for a second round of funding  for the Tri-Association Manufacturers’ Initiative.  Anyone interested in accessing this type of funding or bringing forward other items for discussion should plan to attend.

Here are the directions:

The roundtable will be held in Council Chambers – 2nd floor Northumberland County Administration Building.  The Google link and address are below. Parking is free and Northumberland County Economic Development has generously offered to provide the refreshments.

3. *******************************************************************

The MPP Provincial Roundtable will be held on Monday, January 30, 2012 from 9:00 AM -11:00 AM in the GPA EDC Boardroom at 210 Wolfe Street in Peterborough.

This is an opportunity for manufacturers to provide issues/ideas/comments/concerns to the provincial government in preparation for the next government fiscal year budget and planning process.  This will be an ideal time to bring forward provincial requests such as continued funding of the Eastern Ontario Development Fund, the Rural Economic Development fund and other provincial matters that may have an impact on your manufacturing business.  We hope that you or a designate are able to take advantage of these opportunities and participate in the discussion with your manufacturing colleagues and government representatives.

Two federal government apprenticeship grants available through Service Canada    http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/goc/apprenticeship.shtml

1.  Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG)

Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) is a taxable cash grant available to registered apprentices once they have successfully completed their first or second year/level (or equivalent) of an apprenticeship program in one of the Red Seal trades. Here is the Red Seal trade designation by province or territory.  Apprentices should be aware that there is a deadline to apply.

2.  Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG); New in Canada's Economic Action Plan

As part of Canada's Economic Action Plan, the Government made a commitment to encourage skilled trades and apprenticeships by investing $40 million per year in an ongoing Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) program which complements the existing Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG). It is estimated that approximately 20,000 apprentices will be eligible each year for the ACG.

The completion grant will be offered to apprentices who complete their training, become certified journeypersons in a designated Red Seal trade and who obtain either the Red Seal endorsement or a provincial or territorial Certificate of Qualification.  Apprentices should be aware that there is a deadline to apply.
